Meeting Notes:

  • Catherine and Dr. Cox taught the third course in Best Practices in Teaching and Learning module. Learning objectives for week three were:
    • Identify methods of formative and summative assessment that can be used in your final activity for high school students
    • Identify the three corners of the assessment triangle: observation/cognition/interpretation
  • Curriculum development groups reported topics for their lesson
    • Catherine and Vanessa—Phase changes
    • Sonny and Quincy—Impurities in materials
    • Amanda, Marc, Thej—Size and scale related to nanotech

Module Assignments:

  • Reading activity posted in Dropbox under week4 (send one discussion question inspired by reading to Catherine cberdanier@purdue.edu by Monday @ 5pm.
  • Submit slide describing progress on deliverable by Tuesday @ 5 pm.
  • Work with partners to develop materials for your lesson plan:
    • Create summative assessments for students (pre-assessments and post-assessments)
    • Develop instructions for a student activity to use during the lesson. Include  formative assessments (both teacher and student-led) in the activity
    • Compile a teacher’s guide to the activity. Note potential pitfalls of the activity and how to avoid them.
    • Create a teacher’s key for the activity.

Meeting Notes:

  • Dr. Black introduced Ms. Kathyryn Simmons to the group. She will be serving as our IGERT administrative assistant.
  • Catherine and Dr. Cox presented week 2 of Best Practices in Teaching and Learning module using the LEADER framework. The learning objectives were:
    • Translate your “expert-level” knowledge, skills, and insights to learning environments to an educated, but non-expert audience (teachers) and new learners (students).
    • Tailor communication of technical content to selected audiences, based on their goals and motivations (specifically, teachers and students.)

 

Module Assignments:

  • Reading activity posted in Dropbox under week3 (send one discussion question inspired by reading to Catherine cberdanier@purdue.edu by Monday @ 5pm.
  • Work with partner to develop materials for lesson plan:
    • Select your topic for the final project with your partner
    • Determine learning objectives for the activity
    • Develop questions teachers can ask students as a warm-up to the activity
    • Select background reading for teachers about the scientific context

  • Catherine and Dr. Cox began the Best Practices in Teaching and Learning module with the module introduction.
    • New topic this year is inter-institutional collaborations
    • Introduction of the LEADER framework (Locate, Evaluate, Absorb, Demonstrate, Evolve, Reflect)

  • Quincy presented about research involving human subjects as part of the IP/ethics module.
  • We had an in-class debate on a specific case study involving human subjects.
  • We also went over the collaborative research simulation as a group.
