Research

Each group is required to submit a weekly report with the identified individual and group activities related to the research project. This does include literature search and discussions on experimental procedures and performance of experiments at each institution.

Experienced:

-       Develop experimental procedure.  (Each researcher from each university develops the experimental procedures for their contribution of the collaborative project. The proposed procedures should be discussed as a group at least prior to the presentation. Local students must carry out work cooperatively. Trainees are encouraged to visit the partner institution to learn new techniques., or plan to do so during retreats.)

-       Acquire necessary materials, secure instruments, and determine experimental parameters for conducting experiments.

-       Mentor and train new IGERT trainees in laboratory setting and during experimental procedures.

-       Maintain a lab notebook, documenting materials, instruments, parameters, experimental conditions, and results (failures and successes).

-       Report and summarize findings (experimental results such as graphs, tables, plots, images, etc. and captions) during meetings.

New:

-       Assist in developing experimental procedure.

-       Follow instructions from experienced IGERT trainees and assist them in experimental procedures.

-       Maintain a lab notebook, documenting materials, instruments, parameters, experimental conditions, and results (failures and successes).

-       Assist in reporting findings (experimental results such as graphs, tables, plots, images, etc. and captions).

-       Record and upload weekly team reports with assistance of group members.

Final Report

Each researcher is to contribute to the final report due on December 8. Individual contributions will be discussed amongst the group members and documented in an accountability sheet that will be provided to each group. This sheet is to be turned into Dr. Black and the Research Coordinator.  The final report should include: Abstract, background, materials and instruments, experimental, results and discussion, conclusion, references, and acknowledgements stating each schools contribution as well as funding. More than one person can contribute to different sections. Each trainee will review the final report for accuracy, grammar, clarity, and data. Each group member should have a good understanding of the research project.

Fellowship Proposal – follow up

In the spring trainees will work on individual NSF fellowship proposals based on the work done in the fall. The research projects, if successful, will continued in the spring.
