Electron spin resonance study on dependence of nanoparticle toxicity on method of preparation

 

Presenter 2: Tanya David

Pain Management for Sickle Cell Anemia using nanoparticles

Research Idea: Use self assembled polymers or polymer coated magnetic nanoparticles to act as “soft bowling balls” to unblock blockages and keep the blood vessels clear of blockages cause by sickled cells.

 

Presenter 3: Marc J. Murphy

Exploration of Magnetic Tissue Scaffold Composites

Research Idea: Investigate various materials (both scaffold and magnetic) that can be used to form magnetic scaffold composites.

Research idea looked into the use of nanoparticles to suppress the third chromosome that causes Down’s syndrome

Regeneration of Pancreatic Islet Cells

Research Idea: Continuation of use of injection of polyamidoamine dendrimer nanoparticles (PDN) into pancreatic ducts for pancreatic cell regeneration

 

Presenter 3: Rabia Hussain

Luminescent Silica Core/Silver Shell Encapsulated with Eu(III) Complex for Time-Resolved In-Vitro Diagnostics

Research Idea: Continuation of the use of particular encapsulated nanoparticles to enhance fluorescence emission and yield in-vitro/in-vivo stability

Proposal: Studying an effective way of adminstering Insulin into the body via a patch embedded with nanoparticles.

Title: The Use of Nanoparticles in Biosensors to enhance Lupus Detection.

Proposal: Finding an effective process to manufacture biosensors for Lupus detection.

Title: Challenges and Breakthroughs in Recovering from a Broken Heart

Proposal: How to accelerate, improve, and enhance stem cells for cardiac
cell repair after severe cardiac episode through use of biocompatible nanoparticles
or Nano fibers.

 

Fourth Presenter: Tasha Zephirin

Title: Use of Case Studies in Exploring Public Perceptions of Bio-nanotechnology Applications.

Proposal: How do persons think about bio-nanotechnology applications?

  • The next few weeks plan to stay until 12:20 for the meetings to make up for the time necessary to complete the first half of the IR module. Four people will be presenting next week, Casey will be added to the presenters during week 7 and Vanessa will be added to the presenters during week 8
  • Please try and make sure to be prepared for presentations, consult a faculty member to help generate an idea for proposal if assistance is needed. Make sure to upload presentation slides one week prior to presentation date
  • Evaluations from today's presentation should be sent to Quincy

Title: Electron spin resonance study on dependence of nanoparticle toxicity in preparation methods

Proposal: To study the effects of preparation methods of nanoparticles and the generation of free radicals due to the methodology; use of ESR to determine the effects of free radicals in tissue.

Title: Tapping into Bioelectricity – Modulating cell functions using thermoelectric nanomaterials

Proposed Research Idea: Use of metallic L-shaped particles to penetrate the membrane of the cell for therapeutic purposes.

Second Speaker: Marc Murphy

Title: Design and Materials Screening of Magnetic Tissue Scaffold Composites

Proposed Research Idea: Use of magnetic nanoparticles in combination with tissue scaffolds for assisted, magnetic placement

  • Be more critical about the evaluations, you should not be giving all 5’s.  Think critically about the presentation so you know how to present when it’s your turn.
  • Next week’s presenters please have your rough drafts up by Friday, October 5, 2011.
