IGERT-MNM requires that all trainees and associate trainees be engaged in their own professional development, assist other trainees, and contribute to the project's activities and resources.

The training occurs primarily through weekly meetings in which four modular courses are delivered by groups of trainees with faculty assistance during the academic year. The meetings are facilitated by video conference to connect the three campuses. The Modular Courses are:

  • Intellectual Property and Ethics in Research
  • Technical Writing
  • Independent Research in Magnetic and Nanostructured Materials
  • Pedagogy Applied to Science and Engineering

Twice a year, trainees and faculty meet in multi-day retreats: at Cornell in the winter, and at NSU in the summer.

Over the summer, trainees working in teams revise the modular courses based on formative evaluation, and design an improved curriculum for the following year.
