Meeting Summary and Deadlines: May 31, 2012

Activities and assignments:

  • IGERT Retreat next week: June 5-8, 2012
  • Please check the dropbox for retreat agenda, poster guidelines, and presentation guidelines (for who is scheduled to present).
  • We started part 6/8 of the pedagogy module.
  • We had group discussions on effective communication.
  • Check dropbox folder for reading materials and also supplementary readings.
  • Final assignment:  HW in dropbox folder and bring a hard copy to the meeting next week.
  • Prepare Retreat Posters and Presentations (for who is presenting)
  • Next group meeting: 6th June, Wednesday, 10:30am

Meeting Summary and Deadlines: May 16, 2012

Activities and assignments:

  • We started part 5/8 pf this module, titled as "Pedagogies of Engagement"
  • We had discussion about HW submitted, "Lesson Plan". Trainees gave their comments and explained what and how they addressed their objectives.
  • Discussions in pairs and then as whole group about the reflection of today's reading assignment.
  • For videos related to today's presentation, contact Tasha.
  • Check dropbox folder for reading materials and also supplementary readings.
  • Weekly assignments: Reflection on reading in googlegroup, HW in dropbox folder.
  • Next meeting: 31st May, Thursday, 900am. (24th May meeting cancelled.)

Meeting Summary and Deadlines: May 9, 2012

Activities and assignments :

  • We had discussion about Homework, and trainees gave their comments.
  • Dr. Cox presented “Backwards frame work”
  • The Backwards Design Template to be used for HW4 and the Smith et al. paper for next week's reading has been added to the Dropbox.
  • Check dropbox folder for slides reading materials and also supplementary readings.
  • Reflections on the Smith et al. reading will be due to GOOGLEGROUPS by Noon, Tuesday, May 15th. HW4 (Backwards Design lesson plan) will be due on Wednesday, May 16th to the DROPBOX
  • Next meeting: 16th May, Wednesday, 10:00am.

Activities and assignments:

  • The reference text How People Learn: Brain, Mind, Experience and School by Bransford can now be viewed in .pdf form in the dropbox.
  • We shared our summaries and discussions from the previous week’s reading assignments.
  • Deliverable for next week: Reflection on reading in googlegroup and HW in dropbox folder.
  • Dr. Black asked to complete the NSF survey ASAP.
  • Next meeting will be on 3rd May 2012,  Thursday.

 

Meeting Summary and Deadlines: April 19, 2012

Activities and assignments:

  • New module "Best Practices in Teaching and Learning (BPTL)" began, assignments may be viewed on share drive (Dropbox.com) in the "Teaching and Learning" folder within the word document starting on page 3 .
  • Also review the word document for supplemental reading
  • Next meeting will be on 26th April 2012.

Meeting Summary and Deadlines: April 12, 2012

Activities:

  • Presentations as scheduled. Tasha and Haressh will present next week.
  • Students and faculty were advised again about being prompt to weekly IGERT meetings
  • Will be moving to the Pedagogy Module next week
  • Next meeting will be on April 19.

Assignments:

  • Upload your proposal slides on the shared folder, along with your proposal outline.
  • NSU Students: Submit a hard copy of your proposal outline ASAP
  • Upload your trainee profile, if you have not already done so.
  • Upload summary of proposal presentation evaluations for this week’s presenters (Sha’La, Seth, TJ)
  • White Paper to accompany proposal due May 15, 2012

 

Meeting summary and Deadlines: April 5, 2012

Activities:

  • Presentations as scheduled. Olu’s presentation was moved to next week.
  • Students and faculty were advised again about intellectual property rights of all ideas presented
  • Dr. Black shared slides by Dr. Carl Wieman about development of expert competence research.
  • Next meeting will be on April 12.

Assignments:

  • Upload your proposal slides on the shared folder, along with your proposal outline.
  • Submit a hard copy of your proposal outline, if you have not already done so.
  • Download evaluation rubric and use it to evaluate proposal documents assigned to you (online schedule):
    • Upload your trainee profile, if you have not already done so.
    • Upload summary of proposal presentation evaluations (Lei, Tanya, Casey, Mayy)

Meeting summary and Deadlines: March 1, 2012

Activities:

  • No presentations, Dr Black reviewed the trainees' responsibilities and expected involvment in IGERT activities.
  • Dropbox will be used to upload the assignments and documents.
  • Dr Black will email the directions, evaluation commitees' names and the rubric for proposal presentations.
  • Next meeting will be on March 15, 2012.

Assignments:

  • Prepare your presentations and white papers according to the directions provided.

Activities:

  • Presentations by Quincy, Ahmad, Olu and Tasha, followed by questions and discussion.
  • Audience members judged the presentations based on the presentation rubric.
  • Dr Black and Dr Umbach also participated in the discussion.
  • Next meeting Feb. 16, 2012 at 9:00 am

Assignments:

  • Next week there will be more student presentations.

    • Audience members judged the presentations based on the presentation rubric.
    • Dr. Noginova, Dr. D. Samantry, Dr Black and Dr Umbach participated in the discussion.
    • Dr. Black formed groups, team leaders and teams to manage and handle IGERT management issues.
