2010 November-December Minutes

12/15/10 1:20-1:50
There was a discussion held among the NSU IGERT students about some suggestions for the IGERT spring course.
1) We would like to read the IGERT proposal so that everyone has a very clear idea of what is expected to be taught and learned in these courses.
2) If part of the scope of the professional development course is similar or fits well with Dr. Liddell's class, then we would like to adapt a course syllabus similar to hers (with her permission). 3)We would also like to know and have a detailed syllabus for the course (with assignments and specific expectations for each assignment included) so that we can manage our time for completing assignments as well as other graduate duties more efficiently.

12/8/10 1:25-2:30
1) Power point slide were presented about the advice reviewers gave to authors on their documents, and the revisions the authors made. Presenters: Tanya, Taina, Thomas, Amanda, Mohammed, and Olu
2) Slide should be posted under Documents in the wiki.

12/1/10 1:15-2:45
1) Dr. Black used a previously written NSF proposal to show an example of how to critique scientific writing.
2) She discussed the importance of reading and understanding the proposal announcement, and making sure that your document has exactly what the funding agency is asking for.
3)It was advised that once the proposal (or scientific document) has been peer reviewed several times and corrected, an external non-bias reviewer would be beneficial to have review the document. The reviewer should be someone knowledgeable in the field of research that covers the scope of the document.
'''ASSIGNMENT''':
4) Students please upload documents for peer review. Reviewer please make your comments on the documents and repost the document to the wiki.
5) Authors please make the necessary changes and corrections to your reviewed documents at your own discretion and repost to the wiki.
6) For next week 12/8/10, please prepare a few slides about the advice the reviewers gave and the changes that were made to your document.

11/17/10 1:25-2:45
1) Dr. Liddell from Cornell gave a presentation on how to formulate a new research idea and turn it into a research proposal.
2) To begin formulating ideas for a new research project, one should: " Review literature with an eye for problems, approach, solutions, and new ideas. Broaden your knowledge on the subject matter, and if needed find basic information like tutorial type modules."
3) Her presentation also emphasized when writing your proposal stating the ideas of the research clearly especially when using figure; making captions in the figures rich with information.
