  • Link to IGERT survey being emailed out this week. Survey must be submitted by April 20, 2013
  • 5 minute review of discussion board topic “How can principles of Backwards Design be applied outside the classroom?”
  • Course on “Assesment/Backwards Design” led by Dr. Cox and Tasha.
  • Group discussion of video editing techniques and media
  • Next week deliverable
    • Video Overview:  For each learning goal, identify its curricular priority, task, and how you will know the goal was achieved. Ensure that goal, task, and acceptable evidence are aligned.
    • Video Storyboard: Further brainstorms of what can be included in the video. Focus on general images, pictures, how the ideas will be presented

  • Reviewed Mohammed Mayy's Video for a general consensus considering an expert and novice point of view.
    • Discussed the relationship between transfer and learning conditions
  • Discussed learning objectives which include pattern learning, fluent retrieval (recall), Adaptive Expertise (such as Meta cognition)
  • Discussed Weekly Assignments
    • oVideo Overview
    • oVideo Storyboard ....use this to populate the video initially in a bullet form. It will then transform into a platform that may be used as an interactive space.

Today we spoke about:

  • Learning Objectives
  • Looked at two different case studies and discussed how/if they were effectively received by their audience
  • Looked at three different potential audiences and discussed how we would communicate with them and tailor our communication for each
  • 20 min feedback session: Spoke with another group member about the beginning of storyboard process. There is also an evaluation schedule on dropbox in which you are required to give feedback. Please email your feedback to the assigned person( the person listed in the first column of the table). The evaluater will change on a weekly basis.

Weekly Assignment:

  • Video Overview- Identify strategies you will use to ensure effective communication on your topic
  • Video Storyboard- Add initial brainstorms of what can be included in the video. Focus on general ideas/flow
  1. Reading- (new trainees): SKIM through Chp 2,3,5 of How People Learn, Tasha will be sending out link (returning trainees): PDF ASEE12 in the Dropbox
  • Weekly reflection posted on googlegroup (If you still need access to the googlegroup, the link is posted on the Pedagogy syllabus)

2) Weekly reflection to googlegroup. Few thoughts, not a full page (due by noon Tues).

3) Video, the science Gap (PhDcomic)

4) Skim through the paper "Generic Skill Debate in Research Higher Degrees"

5) Glance at the other stuff on DropBox.

6)Read the other discussions from googlegroup.
