    • We started part 5/8 of this module, titled as "Pedagogies of Engagement"
    • We had discussion about HW submitted, "Lesson Plan". Trainees gave their comments and explained what and how they addressed their objectives.
    • Discussions in pairs and then as whole group about the reflection of today's reading assignment.

    • We had discussion about Homework, and trainees gave their comments.
    • Dr. Cox presented “Backwards frame work”
    • The Backwards Design Template to be used for HW4 and the Smith et al. paper for next week's reading has been added to the Dropbox.
    • Check dropbox folder for slides reading materials and also supplementary readings.
    • Next meeting: 16th May, Wednesday, 10:00am.

    Assignments:

    • Reflections on the Smith et al. reading will be due to GOOGLEGROUPS by Noon, Tuesday, May 15th. HW4 (Backwards Design lesson plan) will be due on Wednesday, May 16th to the DROPBOX

    • We discussed the previous week’s reading assignment (Chapters 6 in How People Learn).  Topics included: Knowledge-Centered, Learner-Centered, Assessment-Centered, and Community Centered
    • Discussed how do people work in groups: respecting others, maturity, understanding human dynamics, being more community centered.
    • The discussion was led by PowerPoint made by Tasha and Dr. Cox.  That PowerPoint will be added to the dropbox.
    • The reflections from last weeks discussions of chapters 2,3, and 5  can be viewed in the dropbox folder.  (IGERT-MNM>Modules>Teaching and Learning>HWs>HW1)

    Assignments:

    • Deliverable for next week: Based on HPL framework (Chapter 6 in How People Learn) and the discussions we had on 5/3/12, consider how you would present an aspect of your technical research to an unfamiliar audience of your choice (e.g.  Graduate student in another discipline, father, teenager etc.).
    • Deliver this information and write a 1-page minimum reflection about this experience.
    • This and all homework assignments will be double-spaced, Times New Roman, Font size 12, in a Microsoft Word document and placed in the Dropbox folder (IGERT-MNM>Modules>Teaching and Learning>HWs>HW2) by NOON BEFORE the following meeting.
    • Read Chapter 1 in Backwards Design by Wiggins & Tighe and add your short reflection on the reading to the googlegroup (igert-mnm-ed@googlegroups.com)
    • All assignments can be seen on the module syllabus available in the dropbox (IGERT-MNM>Modules>Teaching and Learning>BPTL_Syllabus_v10.docx)
    • Submit your NSF survey.  Help Dr. Black with your input to the following question:  Please describe up to three research or educational achievements/outcomes involving either a single trainee or a group of trainees made possible through the participation of trainees in your IGERT project during this reporting period.

    HPL Framework Summary:

    Knowledge-Centered: students knowing how to apply knowledge, learning with understanding and knowing when to apply information (organizing information around key concepts)

    Learner-Centered: focused on students; identifying and using prior knowledge, skills, misconceptions, learning styles, beliefs, and preconception of each student

    Assessment-Centered: provides opportunities for students and faculty to obtain a mutual understanding of the material

    Community-Centered: encourages students and faculty to learn from each other; involves students working together in class (e.g. chat rooms, listservs, webservers, Dyknow) and out of class
